I THE TANGENT, il progetto progressive/jazz-rock di Andy Tillison, pubblicheranno il nuovo album “Songs From The Hard Shoulder” il 10 giugno 2022, su Inside Out Music. Il nuovo lavoro vede la band olandese concentrata principalmente su brani molto lunghi ed epiche suite, con un solo brano in tracklist al di sotto dei 16 minuti!

“‘The Lady Tied To The Lamp Post’ è uno dei brani più oscuri dei Tangent. Parla di paura e solitudine vissute dai senzatetto, di notte, nelle città di tutto il mondo. È una canzone che si rammarica del fatto che noi, come specie, sembriamo in grado di risolvere così tanti problemi, eppure abbiamo ancora dei senzatetto per le strade di molte comunità prospere. E a quanto pare possiamo fare ben poco. In Gran Bretagna, per cercare di risolvere il problema abbiamo praticamente reso illegale essere un senzatetto… Ecco allora la piccola storia di un incontro di qualche anno fa, quando ho incontrato una signora, bloccata nella corsia di emergenza della vita. Una signora senza cibo, senza soldi, legata a un lampione, così da non cadere nella notte. E mentre si sedeva lì, il resto di noi continuava con le nostre vite nelle corsie preferenziali. E poiché era senza casa, non c’era nessun aiuto in arrivo. Era un’umana distrutta, non un’auto rotta. È stata lasciata li, abbandonata. E tutto quello che le ho potuto dare era una sigaretta.”

With ‘Songs From the Hard Shoulder’, the band (who are celebrating their 20th year in the business) have audibly focused on the compositional structure of this album which in the case of the three long pieces is also highly complex and “thought out” – from a luscious and uplifting song about loneliness in Covid lockdown, to a full on 17-minute long jazz/prog/canterbury fusion instrumental, to a darkly electronic story of a homeless woman with shades of Nine Inch Nails, Po90, Japan and Van Der Graaf lurking within. The album’s final track is the 4 minute bouncy Motown-style track “Wasted Soul”, where the band anticipate a wonderful day in the future when the pandemic is over forever. Early editions and the Vinyl Edition will include the bonus track “In The Dead Of Night” which is of course a cover version of the classic song by UK. The band lineup remains from the previous 2 albums as Andy Tillison (Vocal/Keyboards), Jonas Reingold (Bass), Luke Machin (Guitar/Vocals), Steve Roberts (Drums) and Theo Travis (Sax & Flute).
